Board Members

Alex Sutherland (chair) is the Director of Lines of Sight Limited. As an executive mentor and coach, he works with leaders and senior managers in a wide range of organisations to enhance their leadership effectiveness. He also works with organisations and teams as a facilitator of strategic planning, change initiatives, and effective collaboration. Alex is a trustee of the Fringe Arts Trust. He is a collector of contemporary New Zealand art. His love affair with contemporary dance dates back to an early performance by Limbs Dance Company and has been sustained over three decades.

Ross Tanner has extensive experience in the State Services, culminating in his appointment as the Deputy State Services Commissioner from 1993- 2001. Since the conclusion of his term of office, Ross has forged a new career as a company director, and as a consultant specialising in public management and governance. He is an experienced organisational strategist and provides independent advice to Boards on improvements to governance arrangements, and mentoring advice to chief executives in the State sector. In 2004 he was appointed as an Honorary Fellow at the School of Government at Victoria University of Wellington.  Ross has designed and facilitated strategic planning processes in a range of organizations in the public, private and voluntary sectors. He recently completed the development of a new national strategy for the museums and art galleries of New Zealand and is now advising the sector on its implementation. Ross also contributes his time and skills in a number of voluntary roles including being a member of the Trust Board of the Footnote Dance Company.

Anne Rowse ONZM. Anne is a former dancer with London’s Festival Ballet and is a registered teacher of the Royal Academy of Dance. She was Director of the New Zealand School of Dance from 1978-1993 and is currently the Chairperson of the Dorothy Daniels Dance Foundation.  She has held advisory positons on several Arts Council Committees and has been a Trustee of the National Dance Archive.  Anne has been a member of the Footnote Dance Board for more than ten years.  She was Australasian Representative to the Council of the Royal Academy of Dance from 1999-2001 and is Patron of the 14 + Dance Foundation.  In 2001, Anne was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition of her services to ballet and dance.  In recent years she has been studying at Victoria University, graduating this year with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in French and European Studies.  Anne continues to study while retaining her close association with the dance profession in this country.

Corinne Blumsky is a partner at A J Park, Intellectual Property specialists, with a practice in the areas of brands, copyright, and domain names. She is a qualified lawyer and patent attorney. Corinne has been a member of the Footnote Trust Board for four years. She also is a Trustee of the Enterprise New Zealand Trust. In her spare time, Corinne is learning ballroom dance and is studying towards a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (Marketing).

Deb Daniell-Smith believes that the Arts is the glue that binds communities together. She is a fan of the work of Footnote as they are so accessible with their schools and community programmes while maintaining the highest professional standards. Debbie has an arts management background and managed community funding for Wellington City Council for the last ten years. She established the Dance Your Socks Off festival in Wellington which continues to encourage participation in dance today. She moved to Nelson in January 2007 where she is standing for Nelson Council in the upcoming elections with the aim of supporting the Arts in this region.

Roger Marwick is a marketing and communications professional with two decades experience covering both the public and private sectors. Earlier he trained and worked as a town planner.  A former board member of Wellington Civic Trust, Roger joined the Footnote Board in 2006. He has a longstanding interest in the arts and in particular contemporary dance.

Gisella Carr has an extensive career at a senior level in the cultural sector, including eleven years at Creative New Zealand (the Arts Council of New Zealand), as dance specialist, senior policy analyst and finally as Director of Advocacy and Research. Her early career included being director of the National Touring Agency, the NZ Students Arts Council, and as marketing and tour manager for The Royal New Zealand Ballet. She is currently head of the development staff at Te Papa, the National Museum of New Zealand. Gisella’s career has also included consulting on creative industries projects throughout the country over the last decade and teaching for both Victoria and Auckland universities. Recent publications include Snapshot: Auckland’s Creative Industries (for the Auckland City Council) and Objects of Desire: Taking New Zealand Visual Arts and Crafts to the World (co-authored with Vivienne Stone for New Zealand Trade and Enterprise).
