Company Director
Deirdre Tarrant
Director of Footnote Dance, Tarrant founded the Company in 1985 and has led it to become the national treasure of choreography and dance exploration it now is. Her own ballet background was in Wellington with Jeane Horne and the then New Zealand Ballet Company. A Queen Elizabeth II overseas study grant took her to dance in London and Europe and to discover contemporary dance in New York. On her return Tarrant choreographed a number of works for the New Zealand Ballet Company. Tarrant is a Vocational Examiner for the Royal Academy of Dance and is Principal of Tarrant Dance Studios in Wellington and of The Deirdre Tarrant Dance Theatre, a youth dance company with a huge commitment to integrating dance as a vital part of the Wellington community. She has held many roles in the dance industry over the years and is passionate about supporting New Zealand dancers and creators. Tarrant was awarded a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to the community and dance in 2000. She has developed many choreographies for the Company and has led creative change as Footnote Dance has evolved over 25 years. Choreographies for Footnote Dance include works in both main performance tours, and education works including Pick Up Sticks (NZ International Arts Festival), Outside the Square and War in Paradise.
