Highlights of 2007

Some exciting things have been happening at Footnote in 2007. The company has gone from strength to strength over the past year…

Creative New Zealand Our two key objectives are strong and the company is in great shape, brimming with ideas and ways to make new things happen. Creative New Zealand is key for us with their continuing and invaluable support. This enables us to have a clear focus on the development and presentation of contemporary dance here in Aotearoa. They also provide the core funding for a company infrastructure that ensures a sustainable career for the fantastic dancers of the company. An important part of our work in the contemporary community is the wrap activities that ensure we make connections and strengthen the professional infrastructure of our art form

Choreolab continues to build and Footnote is thrilled to welcome back Justin Rutzou from Expressions, Australia as our Master Class tutor for 2008. Perforum events continue to give an opportunity for audience dialogue and an “up close and personal” studio involvement in the process of choreographies as they happen.

Lion Foundation Our extensive work for young audiences and students continues and we are thrilled to thank the Lion Foundation for their support of our Dance in Education and Youth initiatives.

Mission-On; SPARC Since Made in New Zealand toured in May, we have become Lifestyle Ambassadors for the Mission-On project for healthy young New Zealanders. This has seen an extra focus in our work as inspiration and role models to thousands of teenagers as we tour the country workshopping and dancing in schools.

Museum Hotel proudly presents… Watch this Space Maatakitakihia Mai Tenei Waahi. With the support of Museum Hotel Wellington, Watch this Space Maatakitakihia Mai Tenei Waahi will be seen at the City Gallery Wellington, Christchurch Art Gallery and the Dunedin Public Art Gallery during September and October 2007, so watch out for these intriguing and unusual events. Thanks to Kathy Tipler and Jacob Feenstra and particularly to the indomitable Chris Parkin for this partnership that enables us to connect dance with visual art. Make sure you stay at Museum Hotel Wellington when you visit Wellington - it is truly an arts experience in itself!

Into the REM Zone In November 2007, Peter Wilson’s successful production of Into the REM Zone goes on tour in the South Island. Anita, Hannah, Andy and Erynne will be performing this production as part of a partnership with Capital E for Children. Around the World in Wellington has toured extensively since it was made for the hugely successful Capital E Festival in April. It will finish its year in a youth project for the Tauranga Festival in October.

Museum of Wellington City & Sea As part of the Wellington Dance Your Socks Off festival Footnote performed Dancing under the Niaouli Trees - a work made to respond to the museum’s photographic exhibition War in Paradise. The research and development for this short installation dance work was a fascinating project.

Vector Wellington Orchestra Another highlight for us has been the Vector Wellington Orchestra’s tour of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons in July. Both Marc Taddei and Matthew Ross were real partners in collaboration that enabled us to make a dance work that supported an orchestral performance on stage, but was also valid from a choreographic perspective. A big thank you to Christine Pearce for her vision and confidence on this - More please!

Tasdance and Mercy: A dance for the forgotten At the Wellington performance of Made in New Zealand we were pleased to welcome Tasdance from Tasmania. Their performance of Mercy: A dance for the forgotten was a new work by Raewyn Hill. Originally made for the Ten Days on the Island Festival, Tasdance came to Wellington following their appearance at the Wanaka Festival of Colour. Hill has made work for Footnote Dance each year for the past five years and this was a great chance to keep our company connected to her work.
