Musiquality Workshop with Lysanne van Berlo

Footnote welcome dancer, teacher and choreographer Lysanne van Berlo to Pōneke, to host her Musiquality Workshop.

Lysanne van Berlo is a Dutch dancer, teacher, and choreographer based in Belgium, and a dancer with Anton Lachky Company. She began her movement journey with taekwondo, started dancing at 16 through hip hop dance, and later completed a Contemporary Urban education in the Netherlands. She worked with multiple hip hop and theatre companies in Holland before moving to Brussels for Anton Lachky Company. She is the creator of the Musiquality Method, a movement approach connecting electronic music and movement through hip hop dance–based physical qualities, specific dynamics, and emotion, which she now teaches internationally.

“Musiquality Method is a movement method that explores how to connect music and movement in different ways. It uses various movement qualities and dynamics to bring out different emotions and feelings in the body, creating a new way to move and improvise.

I teach techniques from hip hop, such as waving, bouncing, and isolations. We also explore different energies and tensions in the body, finding a balance between tension and no tension. During the workshop, we focus on dissecting electronic music, learning how to move with its unique rhythms and layers.

Participants are encouraged to use their own movement style, which helps them find new ways to listen to music and express themselves with the tools I offer.

Besides improvisation, I will teach a choreography that I create using the Musiquality Method. This choreography works with the musical layers, the body’s specific movements, and emotions. Lastly, I help dancers break their usual patterns, finding moments of surprise and creativity in their dancing. This way, we work not only on the body but also on the mind and thoughts while dancing.”
