Update from Claire Mules, Associate Board Member

Kia ora koutou, with the first six months as Associate Board member, it’s a good time to reflect and take stock of what I have learnt so far. Three things come to mind, time; covid & governance.

Time: The commencement of the role coincided with my return back to work after maternity leave. I perhaps, naively, thought the balance was a question of priority but have since learned that a sick baby doesn’t consider whether you have a board meeting or not. I have a newfound appreciation for all the māmas and parents out there juggling life, work and babies!

Covid: Continues to make its presence felt with only one board meeting so far being in person. Not only does the lingering effects of the pandemic impact on the practicalities of meeting, it still infiltrates itself into all aspects of planning, staffing & shows.

Governance: The biggest learning for me thus far has been the distinction between management & governance. The Board’s chair, Frank, is providing mentor support to me when reviewing material and information as to where the line of responsibility falls.

As I look forward to the next 6 months, the premise relocation continues to be front of mind. It is an exciting time for Footnote as they look to establish themselves in a new community, building a true ‘home turf’. I have learnt this is no small feat in the not-for-profit space and continue to comprehend the level of contracts negotiations, funding and all the other nuts & bolts required to get this to land.

It has been an interesting and rewarding six months and I’m excited to see what the next six bring.
